Best Galmaegisal in Seoul

If you caught the season premiere episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, you may have taken notice of his dinner with the Korean businessmen. The restaurant featured in the episode is Mapo Jeong Daepo, one of many restaurants in the area that specialize in the best Galmaegisal in Seoul. For the uninitiated, galmaegisal is a cut of pork otherwise known as skirt-meat. It has widespread popularity due to it’s texture that resembles beef more than pork with the flavor to match.

Like many Korean specialty restaurants the menu is relatively simple. Galmaegisal starts the list off followed by a couple of  barbecue staples such as samgyupsal and pork galbi.

Make use of the ring around the grill plate and add kimchi and onions to your egg it makes all the difference. Galmaegisal is enjoyed in a similar fashion to all your standard cuts of Korean barbecue, so reach for side dishes and make the perfect wrap. After dinner cool off with a young radish noodle soup (열물국수) and you’ll be good to go.

Located right outside of Gongdeok Station (공덕역) you’ll be able to located Mapo Jeong Daepo by looking for it’s distinctive orange sign complete with picture of a cartoon cannon.
